Werribee Mansion in Melbourne for Black and White Community

Looking back at the photographs I took at Werribee Mansion, I realise they may find a more compelling voice in monochrome. There is something about the mansion’s haunted reputation, its imposing architecture and the weight of its history that seems to lend itself to black and white. Stripped of colour, the interiors take on a darker, more desolate character, as though the walls still hold whispers of another time, and the elegance of the rooms is shadowed by an underlying sense of melancholy and despair.

I have always been drawn to the history and architecture of this remarkable place. Its interiors possess a refined elegance, rich in detail yet quietly imposing. At the time, my photographic style leaned towards simplicity and a clean, restrained rendition of the scene. Perhaps monochrome offers another way of seeing the mansion, allowing light, shadow, texture and silence to tell a deeper story, where beauty and decay, grandeur and loneliness exist side by side.
