The mural of a heavily tattooed geisha stood beside me as I sat on a humble stool outside a tucked-away café, a bacon-and-egg breakfast plate resting in front of me, almost absurdly ordinary beneath the high-rises of Adelaide’s CBD.
She was turned sideways, her gaze cast elsewhere, yet the whole image had something strangely confrontational about it—the elaborate tattoos, the stark expression, the sheer intensity of the composition. Against the quiet ritual of breakfast, it felt almost too forceful, too pungent for my taste.
