Portrait by Adnate in Adelaide for Mural Monday

Another striking Aboriginal portrait by Adnate, tucked away in a small alley just off Hindley Street in Adelaide.

The woman's face holds a quiet intensity. A bold stroke of white paint crosses her nose, while her expression seems to carry the weight of something unpleasant—perhaps pain, perhaps endurance, perhaps a story that does not need words. There is something unsettling yet deeply human in her gaze, as though she is silently holding on through whatever life has placed before her.

And there it is, unexpectedly, in a little corner of the city that many might simply walk past.

Adnate's art has a way of finding these forgotten walls and turning them into places of encounter. His monumental portraits of Indigenous Australians have appeared across cities and towns throughout Australia, bringing powerful faces and stories into the everyday landscape.

Even here, in a modest alley off Hindley Street, his work reminds us that sometimes the most profound galleries have no doors, no ticket counters and no opening hours.

They are simply waiting for you to walk past—and look.

  1. He is so talented. and to be spreading his art without even being paid...just for the joy of it.

  2. This is a truly powerful portrait. I was especially struck by the woman's expression. It seems to tell a story without a single word, inviting us to stop and reflect.

I also like your thought that the greatest galleries are sometimes found in unexpected places. Street art like this can make us pause in the middle of everyday life and look a little deeper.

Knowing the history of Australia's Indigenous people gives this mural even greater meaning. It is not just a beautiful work of art, but also a reminder of resilience, identity and stories that should never be forgotten.

Thank you for sharing this remarkable piece of art.

    Warm regards,
    Anette

  7. I really like these murals. They bring life to walls that have been dead for a long time.

  8. Un mural que por su gran calidad no debiera pasar inadvertido. Creo haber visto documentales donde se ven aborĂgenes australianos con pinturas similares.

    Saludos.
