Over the years, during each visit to Sydney for conferences, I found myself returning to the same familiar stores. They offered convenience and efficiency, remaining largely unchanged in appearance. Remarkably, despite the triannual renovation requirements imposed by their leases within shopping centres and food courts, the signage and overall presentation remained consistent, lending a sense of continuity amid the passage of time.

As I made my way through Martin Place in search of Angel Place, my attention was drawn to a mural along the way. It bore the appearance of a promotional display—more a commercial advertisement than a work of public art, I believe—though its colours and composition momentarily held my gaze.

Whilst on an evening stroll, delighting in the shimmering night lights of Sydney, I happened upon a number of curious signs as well. The gentle hum of the harbour was accompanied by the warm glow of shopfronts—those modest night establishments nestled along Darling Harbour, still open and inviting well into the late hours. Their illuminated windows offered a quiet charm, a testament to the city’s enduring vitality after dusk, where commerce and leisure intertwine beneath the soft reflections of water and light.

The illumination of Darling Harbour was, all things considered, a pleasing spectacle—particularly given that admission to the event was entirely free. Yet, I must confess a certain sense of mild disappointment; the installations, though engaging, lacked the singular charm and grandeur that marked the exhibitions of previous years. Historically, Darling Harbour has long served as a site of public gathering and civic celebration. Once a bustling industrial port, it has since been transformed into a vibrant cultural and recreational precinct, emblematic of Sydney’s evolution from mercantile centre to cosmopolitan metropolis. In this light, the harbour’s festive displays continue a social tradition of communal enjoyment, even if this year’s offerings did not quite ascend to the heights of past splendour.

Whilst in Sydney, I set myself the quiet task of wandering from suburb to suburb in search of mural art. I made no attempt to hire a motorcar, nor did I feel drawn to the coastlines or national parks; rather, I devoted myself to the intricacies of the city’s urban sprawl, traversing it solely on foot. Yet the endeavour proved less rewarding than I had hoped. The streets of Sydney, for all their breadth and bustle, yielded few treasures compared to the vibrant abundance of murals that grace Melbourne’s laneways.
The first piece I encountered was by Adnan—an artist of considerable renown, whose work carries the weight of legend. But beyond that, the city’s walls had largely been marred by careless tags, their original images so disfigured that one could scarcely make out what once lay beneath. Still, there was a strange solace to be found in Chippendale, a suburb now softened by gentrification. Among its quiet decay, I captured with my lens the solemn beauty of forsaken buildings—forgotten places, imbued with a melancholy charm all their own.

Lungshan Temple, one of Taipei's most venerated and historic sanctuaries, still bears the vestiges of the recent Lantern Festival, with vibrant lanterns swaying gently in the breeze even as spring advances. Founded in 1738 during the Qing Dynasty by settlers from Fujian, this sacred site has long stood as a testament to the resilience and devotion of the local people, having endured earthquakes, fires, and even wartime bombardments.
In my younger days, I often wandered these hallowed grounds, capturing candid images of life unfolding amid the temple's intricate carvings and incense-laden air. These excursions were frequently shared with my friend Darren, a Canadian who, like me, found himself drawn time and again to the timeless atmosphere of Lungshan Temple. Together, we sought to preserve fleeting moments through the lens, amidst a setting where history, faith, and community converge.

There is no epic sky. Just the same overcast weather with constant drizzle. There is also no parking available in the area on weekends. So one can only visit during the weekdays.
